Climate Week NYC 2021 runs September 20–26, and The New School has an exciting lineup of virtual events focused on the changing climate, environmental justice, and more. In addition to these events, we’ve also gathered resources from our community to help kick off the week.

The New School’s Tishman Environment and Design Center shared a list of books to read this Earth Week (and throughout the year!). “We want to share some works to help understand the world we are living in and a more just world that we want to see,” TEDC says. Click here for their full list.

Climate Crisis Resiliency & the African Diaspora

This event will focus on the impacts of the climate crisis on people of African descent across the globe along with the topics of diasporic solidarity, how to build community in the face of multiple crises and how we build resiliency through these challenges. Featuring speakers from different parts of the African Diaspora, including Botswana, The United States of America and Latin America, this event will be moderated by Tishman Center Assistant Director Mike Harrington and have remarks from the Institute on Race and Political Economy, a research center at The New School.
Hoodwinked in the Hothouse: Examining False Corporate Schemes being advanced through the Paris Agreement

From Net Zero Emissions and Carbon Capture to Nature-based Solutions, a number of neoliberal policy agendas and unproven, corporate techno-fixes continue to subsidize the expansion of fossil fuel industries, while further impacting communities on the frontlines of climate chaos. Join an international panel of climate justice organizers and frontline community leaders in a discussion about the multi-billion dollar climate investments being promoted by fossil fuel industries and other disaster capitalists at various NY Climate Week venues over the next few days.
Resilient Urban Futures Book Launch

Join the Urban Systems Lab for a roundtable discussion and launch of Resilient Urban Futures, a new book exploring the ways in which cities are profoundly impacted by climate change, and strategies for cultivating more resilient futures. Based on practical experience in participatory visioning in nine Latin American and U.S. cities, the volume provides tools for engaging urban communities in resilience strategies. Authors of this open access volume will discuss urban climate inequity, modeling and communicating the impact of extreme climate and weather, as well as visioning equitable, positive, and resilient futures.

Where do we go from here? Debating Corporate Sustainability in the Era of Climate Crisis

The climate crisis is quickly becoming a defining issue for society and the corporate world in particular. Parsons Faculty Raz Godelnik’s new book Rethinking Corporate Sustainability in the Era of Climate Crisis — A Strategic Design Approach suggests this crisis calls for a transformational shift in companies’ approach to sustainability to ensure the future, not just of business, but of humanity as a whole. But how might we design business to allow for a socially just and ecologically sound society? This question, which informs Godelnik’s book, will also be at the heart of a panel discussion that will take place to celebrate the book launch.
