ONLINE | Industry Experts Panel: Branded Content

This is the age of viral video obsessions, on-demand entertainment and curated “IRL” or AI unique experiences. Branded content represents a new approach to advertising and diversified revenue streams. From sponsored pieces on podcasts, live video and even sensational TikTok’s, this approach to branding is prompting consumers to seek them out and share with campaigns practically with no prompting at all. These marketing messages are so savvy that they’re almost invisible. It’s a way for companies to engage with their audience, improve their reputation and cultivate new relationships. Hence, the cliched phrase “content is king” is indeed more apropo than ever. We’re experiencing an era where marketing and branding are in a constant state of flux and evolution. As more people skip ads, block banners, and ignore traditional advertising, brands are forced to rethink how to get their messages effectively across.

As we welcome students and faculty back to campus this fall, we are taking this opportunity to honor new beginnings. The university entered a new era with the arrival of President Dwight A. McBride in April 2020. Now, as our campus and city start to reopen, we will officially mark this historic moment of new beginnings and momentum. This series of online events include a Panel Discussion: The Future of Higher Education, Investiture Ceremony, Alumni Day, Supporter Summit, and Family Day.

In the spirit of community, please join the Fall 2021 film screening series hosted by the Lang Philosophy Film Club. Everyone with an interest in philosophy, film, and/or convivial conversation about the meaning of what we experience is invited. Each screening will begin and conclude with a discussion facilitated by a member of the NSSR Philosophy Department. All are welcome!
ONLINE | The Cherry Orchard
October 15–16, 2021
School of Drama is proud to present a special one-evening opportunity to stream the MFA production of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, translated by Carol Rocamora and directed by Aneesha Kudtarkar. In The Cherry Orchard, the last and most famous of Chekhov’s major plays, Russian aristocrat Lyubov returns from Paris to her childhood estate, which is due to be sold. Anton Chekhov’s 1903 play highlights the growing irrelevancy of the Russian upper classes as the former peasant class begins to gain power.
Featuring third year MFA actors: Jerome Allen-Smith, Anne-Sophie de Villeroy, Ariel Diaz-Beato, Brianna Dodson, Kimberly Gómez, Haley Henson, Zoe Liu, Timmy Ong, Jacob Presson, Emma Rathe, Ana Grethel Solis, Booker Vance.
IN-PERSON | Mannes Sounds: A Tribute to Saint-Saëns

This event is “Tribute to Saint-Saëns in Observance of the 100th Anniversary of His Death”. Founded in 1999 by Pavlina Dokovska, chair of the Mannes Piano department, the Mannes Sounds Festival presents more than 20 concerts annually performed by young artists from Mannes School of Music, the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and the School of Drama as well as master classes and lectures by distinguished faculty members and renowned guest artists. It is one of the outstanding components of the Mannes performance program. The events are held at various prestigious concert venues and cultural institutions throughout New York City. The Fall 2021 events will include virtual and in person events.

IN-PERSON: OBJECTIVITY IN THE HUMANITIES SERIES

This in-person seminar series will revisit our paradigms concerning objectivity in the humanities. To many, it seems as if the humanities provide us at best with less-than-objective knowledge claims. Arguably, there are at least two overall reasons for this. On the one hand, there is a tendency to associate objectivity with the kind of knowledge-acquisition, explanation, and justification characteristic of the natural sciences. On the other hand, the humanities themselves have contributed to the impression that they might be less relevant than the natural sciences to epistemic progress, due to internal discussions about the very concept(s) of knowledge, reality and objectivity.
