7 min readSep 29, 2021

Even amidst a pandemic, The New School community has managed to find innovative ways to stay connected. Our hope is to provide an open, free space for the public to interact with each other, stay informed, and celebrate the work of our students, faculty, alumni, and more. Join us online in discussing readings, screenings, and having panel discussions from the scholars, artists, and researchers that make up the university. You can also keep an eye on our events calendar so you’ll know when new events are added!

ONLINE | Industry Experts Panel: Branded Content

Monday, October 4, 2021, 4:00PM to 5:30PM (EDT)

This is the age of viral video obsessions, on-demand entertainment and curated “IRL” or AI unique experiences. Branded content represents a new approach to advertising and diversified revenue streams. From sponsored pieces on podcasts, live video and even sensational TikTok’s, this approach to branding is prompting consumers to seek them out and share with campaigns practically with no prompting at all. These marketing messages are so savvy that they’re almost invisible. It’s a way for companies to engage with their audience, improve their reputation and cultivate new relationships. Hence, the cliched phrase “content is king” is indeed more apropo than ever. We’re experiencing an era where marketing and branding are in a constant state of flux and evolution. As more people skip ads, block banners, and ignore traditional advertising, brands are forced to rethink how to get their messages effectively across.

Join us for our first Industry Experts Panel on Branded Content, where we’ll discuss how to bring emotion and humanity to your brand, and learn strategies from industry professionals on how to stand out in the digital age.

IN-PERSON: OBJECTIVITY IN THE HUMANITIES SERIES

Oct. 25–29, 2021

This in-person seminar series will revisit our paradigms concerning objectivity in the humanities. To many, it seems as if the humanities provide us at best with less-than-objective knowledge claims. Arguably, there are at least two overall reasons for this. On the one hand, there is a tendency to associate objectivity with the kind of knowledge-acquisition, explanation, and justification characteristic of the natural sciences. On the other hand, the humanities themselves have contributed to the impression that they might be less relevant than the natural sciences to epistemic progress, due to internal discussions about the very concept(s) of knowledge, reality and objectivity. Register for your seminars of interest below:

Bayo Akomolafe: On Not Thinking Straight: Stupidity, Trust, and the Ethics of Vaccine Hesitancy in the Anthropocene

Jill Lepore: How Data Killed Facts

Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht: Hermeneutic Complexity and Philosogical Powers

Monika Kaup: Narrative Objectivity

Lorraine Daston: The View from Everywhere: Objectivity in the Humanities

Alice Crary: The Unhappy Marriage of Objectivity and Politics

This in-person event series is open only to current New School students, faculty and staff. Valid New School ID and up-to-date vaccination and testing compliance required for entry.

The list above is just a sampling of what to look forward to this month. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our events calendar, as more events are added regularly.
