“Every day, I am so thankful that I have been able to go to college.”
Tiffany Piko ’19, on why she gives back to The New School
Tiffany Piko is a senior in Fashion Design at Parsons who has political aspirations after she graduates this spring. Read her letter to the scholarship donors who made her New School experience possible.
Thank you.
I think quite frequently about my alternative life had I not received scholarship support and had not been able to go to Parsons. And while having those thoughts, I am always reminded of the individuals and organizations who generously made sure that students, like me, who needed help were able to attend. Every day, I am so thankful that I have been able to go to college. My father was unable to pursue an education but has been so proud to see me do so.
My current successes and way of thinking are a direct result of my time at The New School. In addition to academics, The New School gave me a community in this big and loud city where many people can get lost. I was able to continue running with the cross-country team and eventually became team captain. I have also found mentors who have given me nothing but support and love.
In the upcoming election year, I will be running for mayor of my hometown in Ohio. I am currently merging my thesis with my mayoral campaign to disrupt the current political system that is designed to ensure one party stays elected and only a small demographic is aware of proposed city changes. Using the support I have found at The New School, I am excited to see how this project unfolds after I graduate.
Things have been challenging these past four years. But I am proud, I am thankful, and I am inspired because of my time at Parsons.
Thank you again for your support and interest.
Sincerely,
Tiffany Piko
