After last year’s fully virtual celebration, #SXSW is back IRL in Austin, Texas. The annual innovation festival will take place from Friday, March 11, 2022, through Sunday, March 20, 2022, and features numerous New School community members in its lineup.

Quantum Computing for Design and Social Good

This year, the university’s main SXSW event will be the panel Quantum Computing for Design and Social Good, where you can hear how The New School and Parsons School of Design partnered with IBM to integrate emerging quantum computing technology into the creative arts, applying it to purposes of social good.

The New School’s Maya Georgieva will also host a talk discussing the trends that will have the most significant impact on the future of learning and work.

Featured Session: Designing Consciousness

The world we live in has been designed, but by whom? For whom? Join Dario Calmese, Professor at Parsons, as he helps answers these questions and discusses what it means to design for liberation.

LGBTQ+ Rights and Politics

From 2015 to 2022, we’ve seen LGBTQ rights take center stage in Texas politics with an onslaught of anti-LGBTQ measures. Join CEO at Equality Texas Ricardo Martinez (MS Nonprofit Management ’09) as he joins a panel of LGBTQ political organizations and advocates to break down the current response to LGBTQ rights in the state.

Battling Inequity with the Power of Gaming Tech

The stories that shape our world the most are the ones we hear the least — those told by underrepresented voices. Giving rise to the voices from these communities can help tackle inequality through understanding that spurs action. Join Haus of Dust artist Gabriel Torres (BS Media Studies ’21 and MA Media Studies ’22) and other creators who are using gaming technologies to fight inequity.

Redefining the Mainstream: Indie Games in 2022 & Beyond

Join Lead Producer at E-Line Media Carolina Torres (MFA Design & Technology ’08) for a discussion on the ever-changing notion of “indie.” This panel celebrates the impact innovating gamemakers have made to the mainstream and covers the opportunities and challenges for independent gamemakers, why they do what they do, and how the panelists imagine where the indie scene will go in the years to come.
